Making Bad Rock Canyon Safe for People and Wildlife

Bad Rock Canyon is the gateway to Glacier National Park for millions of visitors, a vital route for local commuters, and a key crossing for some of Glacier’s most iconic wildlife, including grizzlies and elk. This mix makes this stretch of US-2 dangerous for motorists, cyclists, and animals,
but we know how to make it safe again.

The Project

Bad Rock Canyon, just east of Columbia Falls, has long been flagged by locals as a dangerous place for cyclists and motorists and a hotspot for wildlife-vehicle collisions. But it doesn’t have to be.

The construction of a Gateway to Glacier Wildlife Crossing would improve cyclist and motorist safety and wildlife connectivity along the 5.5-mile stretch of US-2 between the Columbia Falls and Hungry Horse bridges.

The addition of exclusionary fencing and a dedicated bike lane would  keep the Flathead Valley’s wildlife—and the people who travel alongside them—safe for the rest of the century.

Why Now

Bad Rock Canyon is the site of a multi-million dollar Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) project to widen US-2 to improve motorist safety. Soon, MDT will finalize its plans for this highway safety improvement project.
Without exclusionary fencing, a dedicated bike lane, and a wildlife crossing structure, cyclists will remain in harm's way, and wildlife-vehicle collisions will continue to put Glacier’s wildlife and motorists at risk.

Who We Are

Gateway to Glacier is a collaboration of individuals and organizations working together to vastly improve motorist and cyclist safety and enhance wildlife connectivity along the US-2 highway on the southwestern corner of Glacier National Park. Please join us!

This is a crux area for wildlife. I have photographed a mountain lion nearby. The road is dangerous - just turning in or out of the Columbia Mtn trailhead is frightening.
